Slowly but surely, this cattleya is getting better. I got her and until I found the right media, she lost many roots. But she likes the setting now: bark and holes drilled in the pot.

No more burnt tips! With the inorganic media, the root tips were always black. But with this media, the roots are okay.

As for a new growth, I’m still waiting for one to appear. And even if the orchid is getting better, I doubt she’ll bloom with her next pseudobulb. I hope I’m wrong, but I think the orchid needs more roots and another year to get to that point.

A while ago I tried using bark and dirt for my paph and it was a complete and utter disaster. For me, I mean. I know there are people out there who have paphs in that kind of media and they thrive but it didn’t work for my orchid. He lost all of his roots so I switched back to just bark and well, for a while I thought the plant wasn’t going to make it. But I think… the leaf he’s growing is a bit bigger? And the rest of the leaves aren’t as floppy as they were before. So hopefully there are new roots emerging. Can’t see them at the moment, though. Come on, paph, just a bit more!

At the back the orchid mum and these two leaves at the front is the keiki. Yeah, the keiki soon will be bigger than the mother. That’s one of the descendants of the first phalaenopsis I got. The plant has a few healthy leaves and is now focusing on growing that keiki. We’re on the right path!

Catasetum is looking good this year

Last year was a disaster for my catasetum. I know these orchids require frequent waterings when they’re growing but I didn’t get it right and the roots either had burnt tips or they rotted. The vast majority rotted and believe me when I say that I was careful with the waterings and they still rotted.

Well, this year I decided to go for a different approach. It sounded stupid in my head but hey, it is working. Rather than watering the plant from above, I’m watering her from below. It’s funny because when I watered her in the past, the water only touched the media, I never “showered” the pseudobulbs nor the leaves. But so far, not a single rotted root (that i can see). I keep the media always wet, yet unlike last year… the roots aren’t rotting. And no burn tips, because the media is always wet. I hope this will continue!
